Family and legacy take a starring role in the creation of Butchart Gardens. Once a cement and limestone quarry, Jennie Butchart, Mr. Butchart’s enterprising wife, created a world of absolute beauty out of a depleted, hollowed out limestone pit, over 100 years ago. By bringing topsoil from neighbouring farms, the family’s abandoned quarry blossomed into the spectacular gardens they are today.

Amongst a variety of gardens, Jennie Butchart created a Japanese garden that meets the sea, as well as a Mediterranean garden where tennis courts used to be. A family operated business, generations of family members contributed to the exquisite splendour of these gardens. Nowadays, fireworks, concerts, and a children’s pavilion with a whimsical merry-go-round are part of the extensive grounds.
