More about the gardens: the grounds are nestled amidst a splendor of ancient firs and red cedar trees, mountains, and the sea. Butchart Gardens is open every day of the year, and each season brings a fantastic show of color and bloom. In summer, the roses blossom, and the annuals always produce an outstanding array of unique flowers.

Family and legacy take a starring role in the creation of Butchart Gardens. Once a cement and limestone quarry, Jennie Butchart, Mr. Butchart’s enterprising wife, created a world of absolute beauty out of a depleted, hollowed out limestone pit, over 100 years ago. By bringing topsoil from neighboring farms, the family’s abandoned quarry blossomed into the spectacular gardens they are today.

Amongst a variety of gardens, Jennie Butchart created a Japanese garden that meets the sea, as well as a Mediterranean garden where tennis courts used to be. A family operated business, generations of family members contributed to the exquisite splendor of these gardens. Nowadays, fireworks, concerts, and a children’s pavilion with a whimsical merry-go-round are part of the extensive grounds.
